Ideal candidates for liposuction

If you are close to your ideal weight and follow a regular diet and exercise plan, yet you’re dissatisfied with the shape of your body due to disproportionate accumulation of fat, you may benefit from surgical liposuction (“lipoplasty” or “liposculpting”). Whether you want a flatter abdomen, thinner thighs, or slimmer arms, liposuction produces visible permanent results you’ll love.

Liposuction can be performed wherever there is a disproportionate bulge:

  • Face, chin, and jawline
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Thighs

The shape of your body is in your genes. Just like some people are tall or short, your shape is genetic. Although, diet and exercise can improve your shape you cannot exercise a bulge away. Liposuction will permanently remove the fat, sculpting the area to match the surrounding contour. Take a look at our Before and After Liposuction gallery to see how you could benefit from the procedure. Dr. Bonness provides liposuction Milwaukee residents trust at prices they can afford.

We are also thrilled to offer the #1 nonsurgical fat reduction technique CoolSculpting!

Benefits of liposuction contouring

Liposuction is intended as an effective body contouring procedure (with healthy diet and exercise in post), offering:

  • A slimmer silhouette: trim "problem" areas to achieve your ideal silhouette
  • Custom body sculpting: target specific areas of the body to achieve your ideal body goals
  • Fat reduction: minimally invasive surgery for small pockets of stubborn fat

What to expect from liposuction

Once removed, the fat doesn’t return. The results of liposuction are permanent in that area. If you follow a proper diet and exercise program and do not gain a significant amount of weight, your result will not change. If you do gain weight after liposuction you will gain it in all areas, not just where you had liposuction. Patients can help diminish and prevent the risk of these complications by following all instructions provided by Dr. Bonness. It is also important for patients to understand liposuction is not a means of weight loss. It is a body sculpting procedure.

In addition, liposuction cannot remove stretch marks, cellulite or loose skin. These features may be better treated with other procedures such as tummy tuck surgery. Contact Dr. Bonness today for more information about liposuction and the possible effects and treatments.

Risks with surgical liposuction are extremely rare. Complications have decreased significantly over the years due to smaller cannula size and better liposuction techniques.

Liposuction procedure

Liposuction is done as an outpatient procedure in the operating room under general anesthesia. The length will depend on the number of areas and can range from 1.5 to 3 hours. During the procedure, Dr. Bonness makes a small incision in the target area, which allows for the insertion of a long, very thin metal tube (cannula). Tumescent solution is initially placed into the fat to reduce bleeding and bruising. Dr Bonness uses state of the art Power Assisted Liposuction. The fat is removed by a vibrating cannula that is gently moved back and forth through the fat. The broken up fat is then removed from the body by suction. With Power Assisted Liposuction more fat can be removed, especially from stubborn or fibrous areas like the back, male breast or re-do areas.

Post-liposuction surgery

Post liposuction surgery, you need to wear a compression garment to keep the bruising and swelling to a minimum and help your skin adjust to its new contour. Swelling should be anticipated for approximately four weeks and will gradually decrease as the months pass. It takes time to see your final result as swelling must diminish and the surrounding skin tighten down.

It is important you refrain from any aerobic activities for 3 weeks in order to reduce the risk of extensive swelling and complications. Walking, light weights and yoga like activity are allowed after one week. Discomfort may be controlled with non narcotic pain medication and your final results may be visible in about 6 months. Return to a non physical job is less than one week.

Scarring from liposuction surgery is minimal as the incisions are small and typically made in hidden locations. Proper care for your incision sites can help greatly reduce their appearance as you are healing.

FAQs

What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that uses a hollow stainless steel tube, called a cannula, to suction out unwanted fat from specific areas of the body.

How does liposuction work?
During the procedure, a small incision is made in the skin, and a cannula is inserted through the incision and used to suction out unwanted fat. The cannula is moved back and forth to break up the fat, which is then suctioned out through a tube.

Is liposuction safe?
Liposuction is considered safe when performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are some potential risks and complications.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
A good candidate for liposuction is someone who is in good overall health, has realistic expectations, and is within 30% of their ideal body weight.

What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?
Liposuction can be used to treat various areas of the body including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, calves, ankles, and back.

How long does the liposuction procedure take?
The length of the procedure can vary depending on the number of areas being treated and the amount of fat being removed. Generally, liposuction takes between 1-5 hours.

Will I have a lot of pain after the procedure?
You will likely experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure, but this can be managed with pain medication.

How long is the recovery time after liposuction?
The recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the procedure, but most people can return to work and normal activities within a week or two.

Will I have scars after liposuction?
There will be small incisions made in the skin, but these will be hidden in natural creases or contours of the body and should fade over time.

How much does liposuction cost?
The cost of liposuction can vary depending on the location of the clinic, the experience of the surgeon, and the extent of the procedure. It is best to check with your surgeon for a clear estimation.

Can liposuction be used to treat cellulite?
Liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite. Cellulite is caused by a combination of factors including genetics, hormonal changes, and poor circulation.

Can liposuction be used to lose weight?
Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure, but it can be used to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body.

Can liposuction be used to treat stretch marks?
Liposuction can improve the appearance of stretch marks if they are located in the area of fat being removed.

Can liposuction be used to treat loose skin?
Liposuction can improve the appearance of loose skin if it is caused by excess fat. However, in cases of loose skin caused by aging or weight loss, a skin tightening procedure may be more appropriate.

What are the most common liposuction techniques?
The most common liposuction techniques are tumescent, ultrasound-assisted, and laser-assisted liposuction.

What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is a technique in which a large volume of dilute local anesthetic is injected into the area to be treated before the fat is suctioned out.
