Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck

The appearance of a protruding abdomen due to stretched muscles, loose hanging skin, and excess fat can be bothersome for many individuals. These can be difficult to correct with diet and exercise.

Pregnancy, massive weight loss, and aging can cause the muscles and skin in the midsection to stretch and lose elasticity with difficulty returning to its natural state. Tummy tuck surgery can dramatically help patients achieve a flatter, more toned appearance. Trust Dr. Bonness to deliver a meticulous performance with this body contouring procedure.

Before you undergo tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Bonness takes the time to explain the different variations of the procedure and help patients decide which approach is best for their goals and expectations. Tummy tucks are often supplemented with liposuction to achieve the desired appearance.

Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures (Abdominoplasty)

Abdominoplasty is designed to tighten the abdominal muscles, as well as remove excess skin and fat in the stomach area. Based on the amount of stretching and loose skin, you may undergo a mini, modified, or traditional tummy tuck procedure.

The traditional tummy tuck (the most common) is best for patients with loose skin and fat above and below the umbilicus and separated or weak abdominal muscles.

Typically, incisions are made very low on the abdomen, from hipbone to hipbone, and the skin is then separated from the underlying tissues all the way up to the ribcage. Dr. Bonness will then tighten the muscles and repair a diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles) if necessary to produce a flatter contour; the skin is then pulled down to the incision in order to trim away the excess.

Liposuction is commonly added to contour the waist and hips.

Patients who have minimal sagging skin and stretch marks limited to below the navel may be better candidates for amini or modified tummy tuck.

This entails a shorter incision along the lower abdomen, liposuction, and removal of a small amount of skin. A modified tummy tuck uses the limited incision of a mini tummy tuck in addition to tightening of the muscles.

Patients who are in need of additional contouring beyond the hips and around the lower back may undergo acircumferential torsoplasty, where incisions extend to the lower back and the excess skin is trimmed away. A circumferential torsoplasty, or lower body lift, is most commonly required in patients with massive weight loss after gastric bypass surgery.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Results of this procedure are immediate.

Tummy tuck recovery may include some pain, swelling, and discomfort, gradually fading over the following weeks.

Rest will be imperative for the first few days to a week. You may resume some normal activities within two weeks. However, it is important you refrain from strenuous lifting for approximately four to six weeks in order to allow the body to heal properly.

It is important patients follow a healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise in order to maintain long-lasting results. Your scar will be long but may fade to a thin line as time passes when proper care is taken during the recovery period.

Post-Tummy Tuck Care

You will be educated on how to care for your drains, which will be utilized to allow for the removal of excess fluids.
