Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

A breast reduction (reduction Mammaplasty) may be beneficial if you have overly large breasts (Macromastia) causing any of the following problems:

  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Posture problems
  • Breathing problems
  • Headaches
  • Rashes, skin irritation, or infections in the breast fold
  • Painful grooves in the shoulders from bra straps
  • Breasts out of proportion with height or weight
  • Difficulty finding flattering clothing
  • Difficulty participating in sports, exercise, and other physical activities
  • Embarrassment, self-consciousness, or other body image issues

40-60% of men are affected by enlarged breasts (gynecomastia). Breast reduction surgery for men removes excess fat or tissue in one or both breasts.

Compare breast reduction and breast lift to find the option best for you.

Milwaukee Breast Reduction Procedure

During the breast reduction procedure, incisions are made around the areola, down vertically, and along the crease under the breast. Breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin is then removed to attain a more proportional breast size. The breast is reshaped and resized to provide a natural appearance and alleviate the heaviness and discomfort on the chest. The breast reduction procedure may take 2-5 hours and usually requires general anesthesia (or local anesthesia for smaller reductions).

Breast reductions are often combined with breast lifts (mastopexy). The breast is not only made smaller but also lifted to a higher position on the chest wall.

Breast reduction surgeries tend to have the highest satisfaction rates of any plastic surgery. Our breast reduction patients from Brookfield, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Oconomowoc, and throughout Southeast Wisconsin are happy with their smaller, firmer, lighter breasts. Their discomfort and pain is significantly improved or even eliminated, and they are able to move more freely to participate in sports and exercise.

Recovering from Breast Reduction Milwaukee

Breast Reductions and Breast Lifts are well tolerated by patients. The recovery is much less than with other plastic surgery procedures since there is no work done on the underlying muscle. Patients may experience some pain, swelling, and bruising during your recovery.

After the breast reduction surgery, gauze is placed over the incisions, and the breasts are wrapped in elastic bandages or are supported by a special surgical bra. Many patients experience breast pain for the first few days, discomfort for a week or more, and swelling or bruising for several weeks. Wearing a surgical bra 24 hours a day supports the breasts during healing and can reduce swelling.

For men recovering from breast reduction surgery, we recommend wearing an elastic pressure garment at night for the first week or two following the procedure to aid with healing and swelling.

In addition, limited movement should be expected in order to allow the breasts to adjust to their new shape and size. Normal activity can be resumed in approximately 3 weeks, except heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. Results are immediate. Minimal scarring in hidden locations is expected. Over the next year scars fade and may become pencil thin when properly cared for throughout the recovery period.

Breast Reduction Risks

Although risks are rare, patients should be aware there are some risks when undergoing breast reduction or breast lift surgery, such as asymmetry, loss of nipple sensation, infections, and thick scars. Following all instructions before and after your surgery can greatly reduce these risks and side effects.

The results of breast reduction surgery are considered permanent. However, breasts may change shape or size with pregnancy, weight gain, or weight loss.
