To Peel or Not To Peel

To Peel or Not to Peel?

Who doesn’t want to:

  • Banish dry skin
  • Fade post-breakout dark or red marks
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars
  • Lighten brown spots and blotches
  • And create smoother, brighter skin

Winter is fast approaching and with it comes dry, dull looking skin. While our instincts are to apply more and more moisturizer, this typically does not solve the issue and may instead result in clogged pores and whiteheads (milia).

What I like to recommend and love to do are chemical peels. They provide many, many benefits. The winter season is a great time to receive a chemical peel and an even better time to start a series of peels.  By doing a series of peels, our skin is retrained to do what it is supposed to do; and that is CELL TURNOVER!! By sloughing off dead skin cells; your skin is softer, brighter, and younger looking, AND hydrated. Peels also come with a bonus, the peel process results in collagen building and strengthens elastin fibers.

At Bonness Cosmetic Surgery and Spa, we offer three different peel strengths or types. While each peel will absolutely improve your skin's tone and texture, each of the peels affects different depths of the skin and therefore varies in downtime and visible changes in the skin.

Our lightest peel is Illuminize. I refer to as our “date night” peel. Your skin will look fabulous and it has virtually no down time. Any flaking, if at all, is usually microscopic. The Illuminize peel is a perfect choice for “newbies” and/or if you have an upcoming event and want have zero down time and still achieve glowing, radiant skin.

Our Vitalize peel, “the weekender peel” will generally result in noticeable peeling for roughly two days beginning approximately two days following the peel itself. For example, if you receive the peel on Wednesday, usually the peeling with take place on Saturday and Sunday and is generally done peeling by Monday. This peel addresses mild to moderate skin imperfections such as superficial photo aging (brown spots) and fine wrinkles. It enhances the vitality of the skin and when done in a series definitely has dramatic results.

Our third and strongest peel is the Rejuvenize. This “transformer” peel targets the deeper layers of the epidermis to produce enhanced exfoliation of the skin. This peel will most often cause visible peeling for roughly three to five days. Using the example above, if you received the peel on Wednesday your skin will typically begin to peel by Saturday and possibly continue through Monday or Tuesday. This peel will transform your skin and the few days of flaking and peeling are entirely worth the way your skin will look. If you’re shy of the downtime, try a little creative scheduling and get this peel, it does not disappoint!

I know how busy life can be! With four children myself, the youngest being 16 and a junior in high school, the two in the middle are both in college and my oldest who moved back home this past April, life never seems to slow down. That being said, peels are a great option. If your upcoming schedule is filled with events, don’t fret because the Illuminze or “date night” peel will see you through and make you glow. On the other hand if your schedule allows for a few low key days catching up on all the DVR shows you never get to watch, the Vitalize or “weekender” may be the choice. When determining your comprehensive treatment plan, Bonness Cosmetic Surgery and Spa, always takes into consideration your lifestyle as well as the goals you have for your skin.

Your full schedule should not prevent you from having the healthy, beautiful skin no matter what the season. Peels are an excellent tool you have at your fingertips to have great looking skin.  Just contact us today and schedule a peel. We’ll discuss together which peel is best suited for your skin and your life!
